On January 31, 1942, the escort vessel HMS Culver (formerly USS Mendota, an Owasco Class Coastguard Cutter) was torpedoed and sunk by U-105. The position was 48.43N, 20.14W (about 500 miles SW of the Irish coast). The ship blew up, killing the commander (Lt. Cdr. Randall Thomas Gordon-Duff), seven officers and one hundred and eighteen ratings.
