HMS ASPHODEL

At 01.54 hours on March 10, 1944, while escorting convoy SL.150/ MKS.41, HMS Asphodel was torpedoed and sunk by U-575. The position was 45.24N, 18.09W (off Cape Finnisterre). Only five survivors were rescued by HMS Clover. The Captain (Lt. Michael Albert Halliday RNZNR) and ninety-one officers and men perished. Lt. Halliday is commemorated on the New Zealand Naval Memorial, Devonport, Auckland, Panel 7.
