At 21.29 hours on October 30, 1942, in position 35.08N, 16.44W (150 miles N of Madeira) the troopship MV President Doumer with three hundred and forty-five souls aboard was torpedoed and sunk by U-604. Seventy-eight crew members and seven gunners were rescued by SS Alaska (which was herself torpedoed and damaged by U-510 during the rescue) and HMS Cowslip and landed in Gibraltar. The Master (Jean Paul Mantelet), one hundred and seventy-three crew members, twenty-three DEMS gunners and sixty-three troops were lost. Only seventy-three crew members and thirteen DEMS gunners are commemorated on Tower Hill, Panel 84.
